Chapter 5: Objects in Equilibrium

"Building on concepts developed in Chapters 3 and 4, we first state the general equilibrium equations. We describe various ways that structural members can be supported, or held in place. Using free-body diagrams and equilibrium equations, we then show how to determine unknown forces and couples exerted on structural members by their supports. The principal motivation for this procedure is that it is the initial step in answering an essential question in structural analysis: How do engineers design structural elements so that hey will support the loads to which they are subjected?"
