Chapter 9: Friction

"Friction forces have many important effects, both desirable and undesirable, in engineering applications. The Coulomb theory of friction allows us to estimate the maximum friction forces that can be exerted by contacting surfaces and the fraction forces exerted by sliding surfaces. This opens the path to the analysis of important new classes of supports and machines, including wedges (shims), threaded connections, bearings, and belts."
