Chapter 5: Elastic Strain, Deflections, and Stability
"Elastic stain, deflection, stiffness, and stability are considerations of basic importance to the engineer. Deflection or stiffness, rather than stress, if often the controlling factor in the design of a part. Machine tool frames, for example, must be extremely rigid to maintain manufacturing accuracy. When the frames are made massive enough to satisfy rigidity requirements, the stresses may be insignificantly low. Other pats may require great stiffness in order to eliminate vibration problems. Excessive deflection can because interference between components and disengagement of gears."
