Chapter 3: Forces in Structures and Machines
"Mechanical engineers apply mathematics and physical principles in order to design
hardware better and faster than would otherwise be possible. Engineers reduce
the time and expense associated with constructing and testing prototypes by
refining their designs on paper before any hardware is built. Computer-aided
engineering tools further increase the level of sophistication that is
available to analyze a design and determine whether it will work properly.
With that perspective in mind, in this chapter we examine forces in structures
and machines as the first element of mechanical engineering."
